Honorable mention - idea competition

Hostel located in the Stockholm archipelago, on the remote island of Yttra Skötholmarna, 40km east of Stockholm city. It is a two-hour boat ride from the city center and it is completely immersed in nature.

The project seeks to embrace physical and spiritual features of the island cottage. The proposed artist refuge is an attempt to reflect the qualities of the cottage retreat in architecture and culture - a place where artists can experience an intimate and contemplative atmosphere.

 

The “cottages” are arranged like a small village (temenos*). The structure marks, in the most radical way, a physical edge between the architecture and the natural surroundings.

The sauna becomes a central element of the living and the required program is thoughtfully arrayed around it.
